Said and Done interview with Pim vocalist for Said & Done Interview By Sean WWTO

http://www.saidanddone.org/

First off i would like to thank Pim and all of Said and Done for taking the time out to do this interview with Worldwidetakeoverzine

How did the band come to be named Said and Done?

Pretty much like any other bands get their names I think. I went through my stash of vinyl and just made a list of band names I liked. A huge list. We ended up with Said And Done in the end (which comes from the Negative Approach song). And when we did put out the news about our new stuff of course we found out there already was a Said And Done before. So far, for us doing our homework. Oh well, all names have been already used at some point.

who are some of the bands main musical influences?

We all have our own influences of course, but bands like Only Living Witness, the Cro Mags, Leeway, Bad Bad Brains, Quicksand, Underdog and No Warning sure made an impact. Stuff like that.

are any members in side projects other than Said And Done?

Nopes. Some of us did an oldschool hardcore band called "Those Days" though that we'll maybe bring to life again someday. Don't get excited, it was just for fun. Henri, who's filling in on drums at the moment has his own band "Maaswater Veenlijk" though. Good stuff, go check that out.

what are your views on fighting at shows?

It sucks. Aggression is fine, as an outlet. Knocking each other in the pit is fine by me, but real fighting just sucks. You don't all have to hold hands or something, but fighting each other isn't going to help at all. If it does anything it's shutting down shows/venues. Fuck that.

how long has the band been together?

Said And Done is rocking righteous jams since 2006.

how many cds eps 7 inches split cds and demos has the band currently released?

We did an online promo of two songs with Michiel Toenink (now mixing live shows for Sick Of It All in the U.S.A. and stuff like that), great dude. The first actual record we put out was the "Everyday" full length. Out on both CD/LP on Shield Recordings. We did put those online promo tracks on a tape for the release edition, to make up for the fact we never did a proper demo tape. After that "Use Your Head" appeared on the Pressure Release 2007: European New Breed compilation tape I did put out with my own tape label Pressure Release. And last but not least we recently released "Endless Roads", again on Shield Recordings. On 7" and MCD. That's our current discography.

what are your views on kids that talk shit on the internet especially after being hit at a hxc show then whining about it for a week afterwards?

I really don't care about this at all. Just don't read it.

what do you base your lyrics on when writing new material?

Everyday life. Stuff that makes me think, stuff that bothers me. I always try to put some kind of message in our songs. I mean, people are singing along to our songs, so we better have something meaningful to say. Just open your eyes, and look around, there's all the inspiration you need.

is there a large and thriving scene in the Sint Anthonis, Noord-Brabant area as well as throughout The Netherlands?

In Sint Anthonis there's not exactly a LARGE and THRIVING scene hahaha. It's a REALLY small village in the Netherlands. We're the only hardcore band from this village. Makes me think of the Little Britain "I'm the only gay in the village" line, but we really are. Hardcore in the Netherlands is more on a national level, it's a small country you know. The Netherlands are doing great, lots of cool bands, cool shows.

how did the band come to signing with Shield Records and how have they treated you so far?

Well, with our former band I just got in touch with Gert-Jan from the label, asking him some practical information about putting out a record (we wanted to do it ourselves). He wanted to hear it and wanted to put it out. He liked Said And Done when he heard it as well, and that's all there is to it. We've been treated well. They're great people.

is this the original lineup and if not what is the current lineup?

At the moment we have Henri filling in on drums, which is cool, but in February Joost our original drummer is returning. He's off to Taiwan to study there for half a year. Aside from that we're still in the same lineup.

if you could have anyone do guest vocals on your next recording who would it be and why?

Anyone? Jonah Jenkins. From Only Living Witness, my favorite singer by far. He has a great voice. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, pick up their stuff (Reflections Records is re-releasing their CD's as a 2-LP at the moment).

does the band have any plans to tour the USA in either 2009 or 2010?

No concrete plans, but there are some contacts. We would love to make it over there in 2009 or 2010. We'll see what happens, I guess it would be better if we would have something out on a USA label or something. I don't know. Would be a dream come true.

in only one sentence describe your sound to someone who has never heard you before ?

Grooving, melodic hardcore. Or just hardcore. Or maybe even "terrible noise". It all depends on who's asking.

when the band is on tour in the van what is usually playing in the cd player?

Hahahaha, you don't want to know this. Anyway, we never put on one entire actual record or something, we just play MP3's. Mixing it up. You can expect anything from Minor Threat to '90 eurohouse. Or even worse when some of the others are DJing. 'Pap en Pudding' probably doesn't say anything to you, and it's best if you keep it that way.

how were you first exposed to the scene and what made you say i want to be in an band?

Hardcore? We're from the same area that spawned bands like Reaching Forward and No Turning Back. Especially that last band totally pulled us in. My first hardcore show was a show by them (years ago, before they got as big as they are now, by years and years of hard work) and I was blown away by the energy. No barriers, nothing. Band and audience were equal. That was the shit. I already did a band at that moment though. Nirvana was the band that made me want to do a band myself, like so many teenagers out there.

when on tour and driving from city to city what is some of the weirdest shit you have seen happen or pass by?

Haha, good question. Eeuh.. We've seen a lot of strange things. From people practically living in their cars to people with insane mustaches. But the funniest thing I think was when Stef climbed on top of our van and Henri got out his skateboard to ride along to the van at the last trip. Everyone was looking and thinking "who the fuck are these crazy Dutchies?". Good fun.

where do you see the band in 3 years from now?

Wow. I never looked ahead that far. Hopefully we're still together. Hopefully still enjoying our thing, creating music we love. Evolving as persons and music wise. Hopefully we had the chance to see some more of the world. We'll see, time will tell.

who are some of the up and coming bands from the Sint Anthonis, Noord-Brabant area as well as throughout The Netherlands that we should be on the lookout for?

Like I said before, you can skip the Sint Anthonis part. As for the Netherlands, check out Union Town, Tenement Kids, State Of Mind, Strike First, New Morality, Antillectual, The Hunger, Outlive etc. All kinds of bands, all kinds of styles.

the term hardcore has become so overused that any band putting a breakdown into a song is considered hardcore but explain to the readers what hardcore means to you?

To me it doesn't have that much to do with the music to be honest. To me it's all about the mindset, the attitude. The D.I.Y. stuff you know. Being a part of it all, contributing. About the message. About thinking. Not about breakdowns at all. Not at all.

How can the readers from around the world contact you about ordering merchandise?

Through our website, http://www.saidanddone.org or http://www.myspace.com/saidanddonehardcore. We'll respond as soon as possible. It's really cool to see people all over the world interested in your band.

What is your most memorable show and why?

Tough question man... A couple of things come to mind, it was great to play with the Cro Mags, it was cool to close off Light The Fuse 2007, but I think the show in Rennes, France on our last trip is the coolest show we ever played. We didn't know what to expect at all, but people were singing along to our brand new songs from the start. France was great. If you're reading this, thanks again Alexx! (Yo Golden District!) Or maybe our first show in Belgium. That was off the hook as well, people were crowdsurfing before we even got to start properly. Good times.

what is your favorite city and coutnry to play shows in and also your least favorite and why?

We loved Spain, we loved the UK, but I think I kinda answered this with the previous question. France was great. Least favorite? Man that's such a shitty question. We played some shitty shows in every country I think. The shittiest thing ever was in Sint Oedenrode. We didn't get a chance to play, some drunks threw beer on the mixing desk. We were amped up to go on and then after the previous band was done the show was over. It sucked.

Who are some of the bands that you enjoy touring with?

All our trips were on our own. Oh wait we did some shows with Real Crisis in Spain, they were cool guys.

where else besides myspace can the readers go to to findout about upcoming shows and other band related information?

We have this thing called a website. Yeah we know, it's out of fashion at the moment, but there's life after Myspace. You can check it out at http://www.saidanddone.org.

What advice can you give to some of the newer bands starting out that maybe having a tough time and thinking about giving up?

What about DON'T give up? Just do whatever the fuck you want, play whatever you feel like. As long as you like it, do your thing. That, and practice. Just practice a lot. For one it's fun, rehearsals are great. Aside from that you'll get better as a band.

where do you think you would be right now had you not been exposed to the hxc metal scene?

Still listening to Nirvana? Oh wait, I still do now and then. I really don't know. It shaped me as a person for sure. I really don't know what to answer to this man.

what is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to the band when playing a set?

"Technical problems" always SUCK. I think I fell down once, forgot some words. I usually forgot about moments like that haha.

what is the worst injury that any of the band has had happen when playing show?

I got kicked in the face once. Think I had a small black eye or something. Nothing major. But that wasn't really an injury. Our guitarist destroyed his hand on the last trip, by slamming it into a concrete pole during a song. It did hurt for days. Not smart, but it was hard as fuck hahaha.

why do you think that people always associate violence with hardcore shows and it always gives hxc scenes and shows a bad reputation?

Because of the way it gets portrayed all the time? You rarely hear them talk about the message or about the D.I.Y. aspect. I mean they even turned straight edge into something negative. Amazing. Then again, there's a truth to it as well, there are a lot of dumb idiots giving hardcore a band name. And most of the time those people aren't really interested either, they just don't want to see what it's all about. They're there for their quick news item fix you know. "Some Will Never Know".

Do you have any upcoming shows that you would like to tell the readers about?

We're playing a benefit for Reflections and Cursed on the 7th of September. As you probably know they got robbed on their final tour and they (both the label and the now defunct band) lost a lot of money. If we can help them out with playing a show...

Is there anything else that you would like to add that i may have forgotten to ask that the readers should know about?

No I think you covered all basics with your total of 32 questions! I'll just use this opportunity to thank everyone that supported us so far. Oh and check out my zine Some Will Never Know (http://www.myspace.com/somewillneverknowzine). Use your head and keep thinking. Peace, Pim.
